By the decree of the Honourable Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah on 12th April, 2008 at Larkana, Chandka Medical College (CMC) was upgraded and converted into Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) Larkana. Then the bill for this University was presented and unanimously passed by Sindh Assembly on 12th September, 2008. The act was notified by Honourable Governor of Sindh on 18th October, 2008 and finally the first Vice Chancellor of the University took over the charge on 9th July, 2009.The Chandka Medical College was established on 20th April, 1973 by the then Prime Minister, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The name “Chandka” was selected as it is an oldest name of Larkana and has been derived from “Chandio Tribe” which is the oldest tribe residing in this area. The university has been equipped with a well-established teaching institute having 1500 Hospital beds and a bevy of highly qualified personnel. This institute has been providing Medical facilities to the population of Interior Sindh, parts of Balochistan and Punjab provinces. Today, this University stands as a shining star in the horizon of all teaching Colleges across the Country (Pakistan) and has achieved immense positions both nationally and globally, ranging from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to General Medical Council of England. In order to enhance the quality of output and efficacy of the higher education learning systems at universities, a mechanism of establishment of QECs has been developed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad under the umbrella of Quality Assurance Agency. To achieve the goal, HEC is establishing the QECs in Public and Private sector Universities of the country. At present the QECs are established in about 80 Universities and this University is amongst one of them. The QEC at this University has decorously commenced functioning from May 02, 2011.
